Any Caribbean drinker can tell you that we know rum. Naturally, due to colonization when sugar was king, rum was the rowdy youngster everyone loved to party with. Rum was the life of the party. And we do love us some rum.

However, due to travel and education most of us Caribbean folks have been exposed to a wider range of things, way of life, food and liquor. It can be said that it was by change that I met this beautiful bottle of brandy covered in dust on the top shelf of a rural town's bar. Little known fact about Jamaica: we hold the world record for the most churches per capita and on the flip side we have on average 10 bars for every church. (Just my rough estimate).

My Introduction

My friends and I find joy sometimes just jumping in the car and drive to somewhere we never been and just stop by an obscure bar for drinks just for the hell of it.

It was on one of those trips I sat in a bar admiring the shelf when an unusual bottle caught my attention. I asked the bar keeper to indulge me and allow me a closer look at the liquor. The dust on the bottle told the story of years of display a long way from its home of origin. And when I asked how he came by it, the bar keep was to happy to tell us that one of his sons's was a pilot and took home obscure liquors to places he had traveled to. We were intrigued and google went immediately to do further research on this Greek brandy. It was the House of Metaxa website that educated us on the levels of this brandy. Then the liquor connoisseur in my circle was too happy to contact his supplier to get a bottle of the 7 star brandy for us to try.

First Impressions

As you will notice from the picture at the top. The packaging of the Metaxa 7 star Brandy is much more appealing than that of the 5 star. Plus the color of the brandy is a true representation of what we must all image the nectar of the Gods to like. Of course only liquid amber would be acceptable for Zues.

The Taste

Always give each bottle a fair chance and try them neat, on the rocks and as a cocktail.

That's the rule we judge liquors by although a few among us call themselves purists. Hell no. not all of us have the need to grow hairs on our chest and go for drinking white rum all by itself. However, we went through the trials and were pleasantly surprised that the Mataxa 7 Star Brandy neat, smelled like dried flowers and prunes. But if that didn't impress you imagine tasting a hot toffee drink that had the perfect kick to wake you up from a dreary morning. On the rocks mellowed out the alcoholic punch but still maintained the beautiful characteristics of almost too mature fruit. Metaxa 7 Star Brandy stood the ultimate test when paired with fresh coconut water and just a splash of lemon juice poured over one ice cube, it was a match made in heaven and an instant winner. Fresh coconut can be an alcohol's best friend or worst enemy because of its own unique characteristics of wanting to make everything tasting healthy.

Finally

Might I add the 700 ml bottle only lasted one evening around 6 drinkers. We all had our own love stories to tell by the end of the evening and we were all busy planning to make space for a bottle in our liquor collections. The box looks awesome on a shelf, the bottle a great conversation piece and the taste will leave you wanting more and enjoying every sip. Why not get yourself a bottle and do it...For The Love Of Food.
